Dr.-Ing. Carsten Ellwein is Chief Engineer at the Institute of Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW) at the University of Stuttgart. His work focuses on the digital transformation of industrial manufacturing, with particular expertise in digital twins, cloud and distributed manufacturing, advanced control architectures, and software-defined manufacturing. He works at the intersection of industrial automation, software engineering, and emerging digital production architectures. His research and industry collaborations address scalable, connected, and data-driven manufacturing systems, including technologies supporting the transition toward the Software-Defined Vehicle and Factory. Dr. Ellwein holds a doctorate from the University of Stuttgart, where he researched distributed cloud manufacturing architectures. He has been with ISW since 2016 and has held various research and leadership positions. He is also actively involved in the development and adoption of OPC UA, the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), and further interoperable Industry 4.0 technologies.
